The
television station now known as WVUA 7 began its existence as
NewsChannel 49 in January 1998. The station became the first television
station in Tuscaloosa since 1996, when Tuscaloosa's local television
stations left the city. The station was very small, covering Tuscaloosa
and the vicinity around the city and county. After a few years,
NewsChannel 49 morphed into WJRD 7, and its broadcast area grew
larger. In the summer of 2001, the University of Alabama became
one of only a handful of universities to buy a broadcast television
operation. WJRD 7 was moved from Jug Factory Road in south Tuscaloosa
to Reese Phifer Hall on the University of Alabama campus in late
2001, and signed on the air in January 2002 as WVUA 7.
WVUA
is an independent television station. WVUA had been a PAX network
affiliate for about six years, until March 2004. WVUA is your
only local source for news, weather and sports specifically targeted
to West Alabama. WVUA can be seen over-the-air on channel 7 near
and around Tuscaloosa and Tuscaloosa County, channel 3 in Greensboro,
and channel 25 in Demopolis. WVUA can be seen on many cable television
systems throughout the area. WVUA plans to increase its broadcast
area even more in the future, and can already be seen in 10 counties
throughout West and Central Alabama.
